As the COVID-19 landscape continues to evolve, new variants of concern (VOCs) like Omicron have emerged, sparking concerns about vaccine efficacy. The current batch of COVID-19 vaccines, particularly those based on RNA technology, is built around the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. However, genetic mutations in the spike protein of recent variants, such as Omicron, pose significant challenges to vaccine effectiveness.

The Role of RNA Vaccines

RNA vaccines, like those produced by Moderna and Pfizer, use genetic material (RNA) to code for the virus’s spike protein, mimicking a viral infection in the body and triggering an immune response without actual infection. These vaccines have shown high effectiveness against earlier variants such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta. Preliminary data suggest that RNA vaccines also perform well, albeit less effectively, against the Omicron variant.

Vaccine Efficacy Against Different Variants
