XLRI: A Unique Management School or Overhyped?

In my opinion, XLRI (Xavier School of Management) is more overrated than it actually is. Perhaps this perception is due to its association with Tata Steel. However, as I highlight in this article, the institute has much to commend itself despite its external reputation.

Overhyped Experience?

There are certain aspects of XLRI that will not live up to expectations based on Tata Steel's influence and its past. For example, the teaching methods currently in use may seem outdated, and the institute’s ethical standards may not align with what students and alumni expect.

Opinions from Alumni

But are these solely my views, or do they reflect the sentiments of many XLRI (XL) alumni? A student named Sagar puts it clearly in a comment:

“If you can keep your mind open and centered, this is the place from where your life will sky-rocket to help you achieve all that you have aimed for.”
Many other alumni concur, highlighting the unique culture and the opportunities available during the program.

Unique Culture and Values

Unlike other institutes, XLRI's culture is rooted in the values and mission of its founding Jesuit priests. The school was initially established to train employees of Tata Steel, with a focus on employment law and better collaboration between trade unions and management. Over time, it evolved into a full-fledged educational institute, maintaining its commitment to giving back to the community.

Size and Student Interaction

One of XLRI's unique characteristics is its relatively small batch size, which, as of my knowledge cut-off, was around 130 students. This means students could get to know a significant portion of their peers and other batch members very well. The active alumni society, particularly the Bangalore chapter (XLBang), adds to the school's network advantages.

Legacy and Traditions

The music of the college band, Bodhi Tree, has achieved a cult status among young people in India, especially during the mid to late 2000s. The band's legacy is a lasting tradition that continues to engage students.

PARTIES AND CULTURE

Let’s not forget the legendary parties that have been a part of XLRI’s legacy. These events are a significant part of the student experience, offering a chance for camaraderie and fun outside the academic environment.

Conclusion

In summary, while XLRI is not without its challenges and misconceptions, it offers a unique combination of values, traditions, and opportunities. Whether it's overhyped or not, the essence of XLRI remains in the hands of its students and alumni. As Sagar aptly puts it, students should think carefully before deciding to join.
