Can Green Energy Power Africa's Future?

The future of renewable energy in Africa is promising, driven by energy access challenges, abundant renewable resources, and sustainability goals. Governments, international organizations, and private investors are increasingly investing in renewable energy projects across the continent, aiming to expand electricity access and stimulate economic development.

Africa's Renewable Energy Potential

Due to its location, Africa has a great potential for renewable energy, including solar, hydro, wind, and other sources. The continent is sunny throughout the year, and the vast Sahara Desert provides a substantial amount of unused land, making it an ideal location for massive solar farms that could potentially supply the world's energy demand. In terms of hydropower, major rivers such as the Nile and Congo offer endless possibilities. The Congo River alone has the potential to supply 40% of Africa's energy needs.

Renewable Energy Projects in Action

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, countries like Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, and South Africa have shown a firm commitment to the accelerated use of modern renewable energy and are leading energy transition efforts. Similarly, smaller African nations like Cape Verde, Djibouti, Rwanda, and Swaziland have also set ambitious renewable energy targets.

Progress in Renewable Energy Markets

Africa has shown great progress in the development of its solar energy markets over recent years. The continent has experienced a growth of over 1.8 gigawatts of new solar installations, predominantly driven by five countries: Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, Namibia, and Ghana.

Cost Reduction and Viability

Over the past few years, Africa's renewable energy solutions have proven to be economically viable, underpinned by significant technological innovations. In particular, the costs of electricity from utility-scale Solar Photovoltaics (PV) fell by 82% between 2010 and 2019. Wind projects reflect a similar trend, with costs declining by 50-60% in the same period.

These cost reductions have led to a gradual shift in Africa's energy mix from traditional hydropower and thermal plants to renewable solutions. For instance, more than a third of Morocco's electricity is already renewable, thanks to the Noor Quarzazate Solar Power Station, the world's largest concentrated solar power farm.

Resilience in the Face of Challenges

Despite the challenges emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic, the fundamentals of renewable energy expansion in Africa have not changed. Renewable energy is set to surge, with Africa expected to make up almost half of power generation growth in the sub-Saharan portion of the continent by 2040.

Investments in renewable energy continue to grow, and the continent is on a path towards a sustainable and green future. Governments, international organizations, and private investors are committed to overcoming financing, regulatory, and infrastructure barriers to realize the full potential of renewable energy in Africa.
