Can I Use the Same Mobile Number for Two IOB UPI Accounts?
Can I Use the Same Mobile Number for Two IOB UPI Accounts?
When it comes to using UPI (Unified Payments Interface) with Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) accounts, a common question arises: can the same mobile number be used for two different IOB accounts at the same branch?
Official Policy
To begin with, it is important to note that you cannot use the same mobile number for two different IOB accounts for UPI operations at the same branch. This is due to UPI's requirement for a unique mobile number to be linked to each bank account to facilitate transactions. Therefore, if you want to use UPI for multiple IOB accounts, you would need to link a different mobile number to each account.
Alternate Method for Multiple Accounts
According to a user, there is a workaround method that allows you to use the same mobile number for two IOB accounts, on the condition that both accounts are linked to the same Customer Information File (CIF). Here’s how you can do it:
Step 1: Check the CIF Number
The CIF Number can be found on the first page of the bank's printed passbook, along with your name, branch address, timings, etc. If both accounts are under the same CIF, proceed to the next steps. If not, you would need to follow the consolidation process described below.
Step 2: Consolidate Accounts
Visit the branch where both accounts are maintained and make an official request on a piece of paper, furnishing all the necessary details along with original proofs to prove that both accounts belong to the same person. Banks have historically handled such situations where one person has multiple accounts within the same bank, and they will likely be willing to consolidate the accounts into a single account, especially if it involves a significant time investment.
Step 3: Request to Merge Accounts into One CIF
Once the accounts are consolidated into the same CIF, request to merge the non-linked account into the CIF which already has the mobile number registered. After the successful consolidation, you can use the same mobile number for UPI.
Linking Accounts in the BHIM App
For users specifically interested in linking their accounts using the BHIM app, here’s a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Ensure Internet Banking on All Accounts
Make sure that all your IOB accounts are linked to the same mobile number via internet banking to enable seamless linking to the BHIM app.
Step 2: Link Accounts to the Same Mobile Number
After linking all accounts to the same mobile number, you can create a UPI account through the BHIM app. Enter your login password twice for verification.
Step 3: Add Accounts to UPI
Once the UPI account is created, you will be directed to a screen listing all bank accounts. Select the bank and confirm. The app will access your bank account and display the last 3/4 digits of your account. Verify and confirm, and the account will be added to the UPI app.
You can repeat this process to link up to 5 different bank accounts as long as they are linked to the same mobile number.
Conclusion
While UPI does not permit using the same mobile number for multiple accounts at the same bank, there are methods and procedures that can be followed to achieve this goal, particularly if both accounts are under the same CIF. For users looking to consolidate and link multiple accounts, these steps provide a comprehensive guide.
