When it comes to the sharpness of a knife, many people believe that only through the process of heat treatment can a blade achieve the desired edge. This stark difference in ease and time required indicates the superior sharpening capabilities of mild steel.

Applications and Limitations

While mild steel can be very effective for quick and easy sharpening, it does have its limitations. For instance, in cutting tasks that require a sustained edge, such as chopping wood, a mild steel knife would need to be resharpened frequently. In contrast, higher carbon steels like 5160 and 440C would hold their edge for much longer under similar conditions.
