Indian Air Force's Tejas Fighters: Current Status and Future Procurement

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has received around 40 HAL Tejas aircraft by August 2023, with plans for further acquisitions to bolster its fleet. The Tejas, a lightweight multirole fighter developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), is designed to replace older aircraft in the IAF's inventory.

Current Status of Tejas Fighters

IAF currently operates two squadrons of LCA Tejas MK1 in their fleet.

Squadron 45: Flying Daggers

Since its initial operational clearance in 2016, Squadron 45 has been in operation. This squadron currently has 16 Tejas fighters in the Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) configuration. By the middle of 2021, the squadron will receive two additional trainer versions for each of the four existing fighters.

Squadron 18: Flying Bullets

This squadron recently acquired its first Final Operational Clearance (FOC) configuration Tejas fighter on 27th May 2020. The IAF plans to bring a total of 3 more Tejas fighters to Squadron 18 over the next two months, which are expected to complete mandatory flight testing soon. Following the addition of these 16 FOC-level Tejas, HAL will provide 8 trainer versions of the Tejas MK1, making the total of Indicated Tejas MK1A aircraft in the IAF fleet 40.

Future Procurement and Upgrading

The IAF has ambitious plans to acquire a total of 83 Tejas aircraft under the LCA Mk1A program. This initiative includes advanced features and capabilities that will enhance the fighting capability of the IAF's fleet.

Upgrades and Modernization

Upcoming upgrades will involve enhancing the IOC configurations to the FOC standards, which will significantly improve the operational performance and safety of the Tejas fighters. The upgrade process is expected to be completed by the second half of 2021.

Features and Advantages of HAL Tejas

The HAL Tejas is touted as one of the best aircraft in the world, with several unique features and advantages:

Lightweight and Versatile

With a weight of approximately 13,500 kg, the Tejas is a lightweight fighter, making it highly maneuverable and easier to operate on austere runways. It is capable of performing a wide range of combat missions, making it a versatile addition to the IAF's fleet.

Stealth Capabilities

Due to its compact size and aerodynamic design, the Tejas is notable for its stealth characteristics. It can perform various missions with a reduced radar signature, making it an invaluable asset for modern warfare.

Advanced Technology

The Tejas MK1A is expected to incorporate advanced radar-absorbing materials (RAM) and other state-of-the-art technologies, enhancing its combat effectiveness. This version is designed to fulfill the duties of a modern 4th generation fighter with relatively lower risks due to its compact size and advanced systems.

Conclusion

As the IAF continues to procure and upgrade its HAL Tejas fleet, the importance of this aircraft in the Indian military landscape cannot be overstated. With its lightweight design, stealth capabilities, and advanced technologies, the Tejas is set to play a crucial role in enhancing the operational capabilities of the IAF.
