Standing Up for Net Neutrality: Airtel's Misleading Missed Call Scam

Today, a very familiar message popped up in my inbox. It read as follows:

1800 209 0921

to block the service

By doing this, Airtel is asking the customers to block free internet so that they can charge for each byte used, allowing customers to pay for their internet usage.

That's a huge problem. Hell no, I won't support this, and here's why.

The Deceptive Scheme by Airtel

This is a clear attempt by Airtel to manipulate public opinion and create the illusion that many people are open to non-neutral internet. This scheme is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of net neutrality.

Net neutrality, in a nutshell, is the principle that all internet traffic should be treated equally. It ensures that no internet service providers (ISPs) can discriminate between different types of data or prioritize certain services over others. This is crucial for a free and open internet where all content and applications have equal access to the internet.

Airtel's plan to introduce specific websites' free internet paid for by others is an attack on this principle. It effectively creates a tiered internet, where content providers who can afford to pay get preferential treatment, stifling innovation and competition.

Promoting Awareness of the Issue

Even I am looking for ways to raise awareness of this issue, because it seems that Airtel is trying to imply that many people are supportive of a non-neutral internet. In reality, this is a response to misleading text messages like this one. It is essential to debunk these kinds of schemes and ensure that the public remains informed.

So, what can you do if you receive such a message? Here are some steps:

Ignore the Offer: Do not engage with the request to block the free internet service. Your data usage remains constant, and your internet remains free. Verify the Information: Double-check the source of the message. Ensure that the information provided is accurate and comes from a reliable source. Support Net Neutrality: Share accurate information about net neutrality on social media, in forums, and with friends and family. Be an advocate for a free and open internet. Contact Your ISP: Reach out to your internet service provider and express your concerns. Let them know that you support net neutrality and would like to see it preserved.

Conclusion

The internet is a platform for innovation, education, and free expression. It should be open to everyone, without discrimination. Airtel's misleading missed call scam is just another attempt to undermine this principle. By staying informed and taking action, we can ensure that the internet remains a level playing field for all.

Stay informed, stay engaged, and stay neutral.
